Holly
Petraeus, wife of General David Petraeus, is heading up the
Department of Treasury's new Office of Servicemember Affairs in
the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The office aims to work
with the US Department of Defense to strengthen and support
military families financially. Part of the new office's efforts
will focus on educating military members about the dangers of
financial predators (including payday loan lenders) and debt. For the new
assignment, Petraeus will draw on her experiences as a military
spouse and work as director of the Better Business Bureau's
Military line.
The new office will work closely with the US Department of Defense
to provide financial education, to monitor and respond to
questions and complaints, and to ensure that federal and state
offices
coordinate their efforts to improve consumer protections
for military families.
Petraeus' first priority will be to
set up a framework for hearing from military families about their
most pressing financial issues. Once specific issues are
identified, Petraeus will work
closely with the bureau to take aim against bad financial
practices. Petraeus has already cited debt and the terms of that debt as two of the most
pressing issues for military members and their families.
